Glossary of Frequently Used Terms

Autumn Haze: a natural trademark EMBA mink color, generally similar to pastel (tan)

Azurene: a natural trademark EMBA mink color, generally a silvery white

Blackglama: a brand of ranch mink pelts raised by the American Legend Cooperative (see http://www.blackglama.com/)

Cerulean: a natural trademark EMBA mink color, generally a silver or gray

Color Added: fur that has some dye added but is not dip dyed, and therefore does not effect the leather

Corduroy: a garment made of alternating stripes of fur and leather

Demi-Buff: a natural mink color, generally a medium brown

Dyed: fur that has been processed to change its color

EMBA: the Mutation Mink Breeders Association (see http://www.americanlegend.com/AboutUS/History.aspx)

Faux fur: synthetic or man made fabric intended to look like real fur

Guard Hairs: the longer hairs above the underwool that provide water resistance and protection

Hudson Seal: muskrat pelts that have been sheared and dyed black

Intarsia: a process where sections of dyed fur are sewn together to form a design or pattern

Kid: young goat

Letout: a process where a pelt is cut into diagonal pieces and then sewn back together to form a longer, cohesive piece

Lunaraine: a natural mink color, generally a silvery medium brown

Lutetia: a natural EMBA trademark mink color, generally a "gunmetal" gray

Mahogany: a natural mink color, generally a darker brown

Natural: fur that is in its original color state and not dyed

Naked Leather: unfinished leather

Northern Seal: rabbit pelts that have been sheared and dyed black

Oxidation: a natural color change that occurs because of exposure to light and oxygen, accelerated by heat and improper storage

Pastel: a natural mink color, generally a tan

Plucked: fur that has the guard hairs removed         

Ranch: a natural mink color, generally a very dark brown or black

Sections: small pieces of different pelts that are sewn together in a garment (i.e. heads, gills, paws, etc.)

Sheared: fur that has been clipped off to reduce the feel and appearance of guard hairs, resulting in a velvety feel and uniform hair length

Skin on Skin: full pelts that are sewn directly to each other

Suede: leather that has a napped finish

Tourmaline: a natural EMBA trademark mink color, generally an ivory white

Trapunto: a quilting technique that results in a raised surface design

Underwool: the thick, soft layer of fur that is closest to the skin and provides insulation
